More Records than Expected are Imported from an Excel or CSV file

When importing an Excel (xls or xlsx) or CSV file, more records than expected may be imported. This can happen when the file contains empty rows of data. The issue can be resolved by deleting these extra rows.

When using Excel

  1. Open the file in Microsoft Excel.
  2. Although rows may look blank, they may actually contain data or formatting. Press the keys CTRL + END at the same time to select the last cell with data or formatting. If the selected cell is beyond your expected data, then there are extra rows that need to be deleted.
  3. Select the extra rows and delete them.
  4. Save the Excel file and attempt to import the file again.
Microsoft has published a support article about this matter entitled: Locate and reset the last cell on a worksheet.

When using a CSV File

  1. Open the CSV file in a text editor, such as Microsoft's Notepad.
  2. Locate where your expected data ends within the file. If you see rows consisting of nothing but commas, then there are extra rows that need to be deleted.
  3. Select the extra rows and delete them.
  4. Save the CSV file and attempt to import the file again.
